Abstract The multispectral scanner imagery of ERST-1 allow us to compare the size, distribution and gray shade of nearshore turbid waters. The main sources of this are river effluents, eroding headlands, production of planktonic organisms and waste effluents. The changes in river discharge, intensity of surf action and direction of nearshore currents observed by mean of suspended particle as tracer, can be followed in the ERST-1 images since we have a repetitive each 18 days. The Guanabara bay and adjacents areas contain a mixture of different water masses, including the discharge of rivers. Complex surface currents patterns exist, particularly in the area outside the bay. Some evidence of pollution can be seen inside the bay. A digicolor system was used and the resulted color enhancement of MSS band 4 and 5 were analysed.
